The Portal:
a vision for the Eastern City
Step into the future of London with The Portal, an immersive Augmented Reality installation that brings Eastern City's vision of the future of Camomile Street to life. Viewed through your mobile device, The Portal reveals the street as a pedestrianised, green space, accessible for all, transforming the way we conceive of the city's urban spaces.
The Eastern City Business Improvement District (BID) and urban designers Publica have worked with local businesses, property owners, the City of London Corporation, TfL and other stakeholders to develop a future vision for the Eastern City’s streets and public spaces. It proposes a number of short, medium and long-term interventions – Camomile Street being one of them – to protect and enhance this vital amenity. You can find out more by visiting www.ecbid.co.uk/vision.
About the installation
The Portal is a striking wooden installation by Jonas Johansson and Erik Schmitz, blending organic craftsmanship with experiential digital technology. Carved from sustainably sourced timber, the sculpture evokes the imagery of a gateway, inviting viewers to reflect on possible futures, transformation, and the threshold between realities.
